  1. The nurse’s priority when caring for a child admitted with an acute exacerbation of asthma should be the airway. Assess the patency of the airway, breath sounds, assess for shortness of breath, oxygen saturation, vital signs, position the child comfortably for breathing, and administer medications as prescribed.
  2. A baby diagnosed with hemophilia who has recently stopped crawling might be suffering from bleeding into the joint. The nurse should instruct the mother to:
    • Apply ice to the affected area.
    • Administer Tylenol (acetaminophen).
    • Put a gate across the stairs.
    • Apply knee and elbow protectors.All of the above are essential teaching points for a mother whose child has hemophilia.
  3. Rectal temperatures should be avoided if the client has rectal tears, any other rectal disorder, diarrhea, and/or if the client is on bleeding precautions.
  4. Common laboratory and diagnostic tests associated with anorexia nervosa include hypokalemia, hypalbuminemia, anemia, elevated BUN and creatinine, ECG changes, abnormal blood glucose levels, and thyroid function tests.
  5. Medications that might be prescribed to a child diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome include corticosteroids such as Prednisone (Deltasone), diuretics such as Furosemide (Lasix) to eliminate excess fluid, 25% albumin to increase plasma volume and decrease edema, and Cyclophosphamide for children who cannot tolerate prednisone or who have repeated relapses of Minimal Change Nephrotic Syndrome (MCNS).
